The last months of 2009 were pretty tough in Florida, so I was looking forward to getting home for a few days over Christmas. I started the countdown several weeks before my departure date and exictedly told everybody on an almost daily basis just how many days were left before I was on my way home!

There had been talk in the news of British Airways staff planning to strike over the Christmas period and a few dates were mentioned in the media. If this strike was to go ahead on the proposed dates, then my trip was almost certainly going to be affected. For some weeks to follow, there was no mention of this strike again, but it was about 10 days befores I left for home that it crept into the news again. Airline staff had voted to strike for twelve days over Christmas, beginning 22 December. Unfortunately for me, it was to kick on the very same day that I was supposed to be returning home.

Every time I speak to somebody back at home about my experiences in Florida, there is one thing I always talk about, and that is my amazement at just how quickly time is passing by out here. I find it hard to believe that I nervously arrived in America almost 11 months ago to embark on the most exciting adventure of my life and to work towards my lifelong dream - learning to fly and to one day be working as an airline pilot. It is without a doubt that Florida has been the most enjoyable year of my life so far. It has had its up and downs but I have loved every minute of it and it is sad to think that my training will soon come to an end.

If you regularly read the various postings I make on this site, you will know that I like to write (often at great length) about how the training is going, and this article is going to be no exception. I am going to talk about the year as a whole, from the day I arrived up to today - 12 December - just ten days before I head home to enjoy the festive period with friends and family back at home in Winnersh, England.

At long last, the ATPL is over. On Thursday 19 November, I received my last set of results for the two exams I had to resit; Instrumentation and Meteorology, and I passed both of them with 87% and 90% respectively. Working out my average from all of the fourteen exams, I am sitting on 90%.

Both exams seemed to get well when I sat them and I completed the Instrumentation exam in about 45 minutes, despite being allowed 1 hour 30 minutes, and I completed the Meteorology exam in about an hour with 2 hours 30 minutes being permitted. You can often judge your own performance in an exam by seeing how many questions are unanswered after passing through the exam once and with few blank spaces on the answer sheet, I was satisfied that I had done enough to pass both tests, with seven to eight questions on both papers having not been answered.
